Drプロットの恐竜教室 『第3話 地球』
毎週日曜日になると友達と走り回っていた僕、毛利隆史が、昨日の日曜日は朝からノートやペンを用意して図書館へ行って勉強してくるって言ったものだから、お母さんは慌てて外へ飛び出して空を眺めて雨になるかなぁなんて言ってた。むかつくなぁ。
でも今日は楽しみなプロット先生の勉強だ。
「おはよ～」
いつもと同じ様に６Aの教室に入った。
なんで？どうして？
みんな僕の事なんか無視して静かにノートを広げて一所懸命に勉強してる。
くそ～負けたかな！
ごん！
「いて～！」
いつもの様に先生が入ってきた。毎回頭を鴨居にぶつけて入ってくる。どうも学習能力に欠ける先生みたいだ。
「起立！礼！プロット先生おはようございま～す」
「はい、あ～いて～、おはよう」
「先生！それどうしたの？」
菊池ひとみが大きな目を更に丸くして指さして、大きな声で聞いた。
「似合わな～～い」
「かっこ悪～～い」
みんながそれぞれに言っている。
「あぁ、これか。ホームステイしている家の人が貸してくれたんだ。背広姿もいいと思ったけれど、、、だめかぁ？」
「プロット先生には、似合わないよ～。だってズボンもちんちくりんだしさぁ」
「上着だって半袖みたいじゃん」
「やっぱり、僕も本当は嫌だったけれど、近所の人に乞食の外人が居候してるなんて言われたらしいんだ、、、、。まぁ、とりあえず上着は脱いで、、、と。さぁ、今日は何からはじめようか？」
「先生が、恐竜たちが生きていた時代を勉強するって言ってたから、昨日は図書館で勉強してきたんだぞ」
僕が一番に口をとがらせて叫んだ。
「あぁ、そうだそうだったねぇ。タカシ偉いぞ！勉強してきたか。」
先生が僕の机の横まで歩いてきて頭をなでてくれた。ゴロニャ～ン。
「タカシだけじゃないわよ。私もよ」
「僕も！」
「私も！」
みんなが口々に言った。なぁんだ、みんなやっぱりなぁ。くそ～
「よーし、判った。じゃぁタカシから何を勉強して来たのか発表してくれたま～え。」
変な日本語、と僕は思ったが、
「は～い、僕は昨日、図書館へ行って恐竜達を調べてきました。ヘレヤザウルスやメガロザウルス。それに、え～と、クロノザウルスなんかをみてきました」
僕は得意そうに言ったけれど、誰も何も言わない。
「ん～、タカシよく勉強してきたね。でも、その恐竜達が生きていた時の地球なんかも調べて欲しかったね。」
プロット先生がヒゲをなでなでしながら言って
「他にも勉強してきた人！」
と続けた。
「ハーイ」「はーい」
「じゃぁ、キヨタカ。次は君の番だ。」
ちょっと、インテリの清高は、ちらっと僕の方を見て得意そうに話し出した。
「はい、僕は先週隆史が言った恐竜を最初に見つけた人々の事を調べてきました。１８２２年にマリーマンテルと言う人がイグアナドンの骨を見つけていますが1８０９年にも別の誰かも見つけていました。そして先生と同じ名前の人もありました。」
ふん、なんだ、ちょっと頭が良いからって先生のごまなんかすっちゃって、、、クソ～。
「キヨタカ、よく調べてきたね。よしよし、じゃぁ今日はタカシの調べてきた恐竜を考えながら、その恐竜達が生きてた時代の地球を勉強しよう。」
と、プロット先生は言いながらバックパックを引き寄せた。
「フフフ、、地球でも入っていると思っただろう。」
僕達がそのバックパックに見入っているのを察知して先生は笑いながらチョークを取り出した。
「さぁ、地球はいつ頃出来たか調べて来た子はいるかな？」
シーン
「ははは、これを調べてきた子はいなかった様だね。じゃぁここから勉強に入ろう。今まで色々な偉い先生達が、色々な年代を考えていたんだけれど、現在の科学者達が言っているのでは４６億年前に我々が住んでいる地球や太陽の廻りの惑星などが出来たんだ。チョークを見ててごらん。その時から現在までの事を書いてくれるから。」
先生のその言葉が終わるとすぐ目にもとまらない早さでチョークは黒板一杯に字を書き始めた。
「こら！字ばっかり書いたら訳が分からなくなるじゃぁないか。」
先生がチョークをしかった。そうしたらチョークは線を引き始め、それぞれの年代で区切っていった。
「よしよし、これで判る様になった。」
でも、僕達にはさっぱりわからない。数字とカタカナばっかりだ。
「これが地球の歴史年表だよ。わかるかなぁ。じゃぁ説明するよ。まず、左端の４６億年前が地球が出来た時で、一番右の端が今の世の中だよ。ここまではわかるかい？」
「は～い」
僕達全員で返事をした。
「よしよし、そこで一番古い化石が発見されたのは３８億年前のこのあたり、ついでに生き物で一番古い化石が見つかったのは、このあたりの５億８０００万年前の物だよ。これはオーストラリアのフリンダース山脈で２００３年の１０月に見つかっているんだ。」
プロット先生は黒板の年表を指さしながら言って、僕達の顔をゆっくりと見回して言葉を続けた。
「まぁ、みんな判った様だから、、、、話しを続けるけれど、、、生き物が生きている時代を大きく３つの期間に分けているんだ。でも恐竜が生きていたのは２億４５００万年前から６５００万年前までの中世代だけだから、僕達の勉強はこの期間だけにしよう。」
先生がそう言うとチョークは勝手に中世代以外の字と数字を消し始めた。
「さぁ始めよう。この中世代も大きく３つの時代に分けているんだ。」
チョークが又、忙しそうに中世代を３つに分けてそれぞれの年代と名前を書いた。
「さっきタカシが調べてきたと言ってたヘレヤザウルスは、この最初の三畳紀に住んでいたんだよ。でもねヘレヤザウルスって言ったら他の国の人には通じないからヒューレャーザウルスと覚えようね。これは長さが２ｍぐらいだから人間と同じくらいの大きさだけれど、同じ時代のイイオラプターなんか小さくて１ｍぐらいの大きさしか無いんだよ。でもプレティオザウルスなんかは大きくて８ｍもあるからすごいけれど、大きいのはだいたい植物イーターだから逆に小さい恐竜の方が恐いんだよ。」
と言いながらプロット先生は黒板に恐竜の名前を書いた。
「じゃ、ヒューイもプレティオザウルスだったんだ。」
僕が言った。
「そう、よく覚えているね。じゃぁ植物イーターの恐竜達の事を何と言ったかな？」
「ハービバー！」
僕達は全員が口を揃えて叫んだ。
「すご～い、みんなよく覚えたね。じゃ、肉食恐竜は？」
「カーニボー！」
約半分ぐらいの僕達が叫んだ。
「ハハハ、、、まぁいいか。じゃぁ次のジュラ紀の勉強をしよう。タカシが２番目に言ったメガロザウルスは、このジュラ紀に生きていたんだヨ。二本足で歩いて高さは３ｍ。長さは９ｍもあるんだよ。そして歯はノコギリの刃の様に１本１本がなっているんだ。ジュラシックパークの映画をみんな見たって言ってたから感じは判るよね。」
「はーい」
「じゃぁ次は１億４５００万年前から６５００万年前の白亜紀だ。日本ではこの期を白亜紀って名前を付けているけれど、クレタシアス期と覚えた方が良いよ。何故かって？だってこれから君達が大きくなって外国の本なんかを見る様になった時、こんがらがって判らなくなるからだよ。話しが変わっちゃったけれど、、、なんだったっけ、、、、あっ、そうそう、白亜紀だ。さっきタカシが言ってたクロノザウルスは、この時期のものでオーストラリアのクイーンズランド州で完全体の化石が発掘されているんだ。でも、これはダイナソアじゃ無くて海の中に住んでいたんだ。さぁ何て言ったかなぁ？」
「マリーンレプタイル！」
先生が言ったとたんに僕が叫んだ。フフフ、、、
「すご～い隆史！」
「さすが～恐竜博士！」
みんなが叫ぶのでちょっと得意になってきた。
「タカシ！よく覚えているね。空を飛ぶのはフライングレプタイルだったね。これも勉強したね。」
「はーい」
ちょっと頭の中がこんがらがって来た僕達は、それでも小さな声で返事をした。
「おいひとみ。今日の勉強って、なんにも出てこないから面白く無いなぁ」
僕が横の菊池ひとみに小声でささやいた。
「ハハハ、少し今日は難しかったかなぁ、やっぱり見た方が良さそうだね。」
と先生は言ってバックパックから青い風船を取り出した。
やったー！成功！だって先生はどんな小さな声でも聞き取るから、僕の送った信号にすぐ反応をしただろう。フフフ。
「ちょっと真ん中の６つの席を空けて広さを作ってクレル？そしてこれを一番元気なタカシ、君が膨らませてくれ！」
とその風船を投げた。それは確実に僕の上に届いた。すごいコントロール！
僕達は立ち上がってワイワイガヤガヤと言いながら空間を作った。
「ヨシヨシ充分だ。じゃぁタカシふくらませて。」
と、プロット先生が言ったので、僕は大きく息を吸い込んで、それをふくらませた、幾ら吹き込んでも幾らでも入る。机４つ分ぐらいの大きさになった時、先生が
「もうイイダロウ」
と言ってくれたので僕は助かったって気分になったぐらいだ。
先生はそれを空間の真ん中に置いて
「これがなんだかわかるかい」
と聞いた。
「地球で～す」
全員が叫んだ。
「でもちょっとおかしいで～す。この地球は陸地が一つしかありません。」
ひとみが少し控えめに言った。
「そうだよ、そうだよ」
「変だよ～」
みんなが口々に言うのを、大きな手を広げてプロット先生は
「ワカッタ、ワカッタ。でもね、これが昔の地球なんだよ。今勉強した約２億２０００万年ぐらい前の三畳紀はパンジェーラ大陸と言って世界はこれだけだったんだよ」
と言ってバックパックを取り上げ、手を突っ込んで大きな虫眼鏡を取り出して
「ジャ、これで見てごらん」
と、ひとみに渡した。
「すご～い、恐竜がたくさんいるわ！」
「え～貸してかして！」
どうしてなんだろう、僕はすぐに反応する。
「本当だ動いているよ」
「ちょっと貸してごらん」
先生が言って、その虫眼鏡を片手でこするとレンズが大きくなって地球の三分の一ぐらいをカバーする様になった、しかも、手から放れて宙に浮いている。
「これでみんなが見られる様になっただろう。」
「あっ、ヒューイがいる。」
「どこ、どこ」
「プレティオザウルスだね。何をしているかヨク見てごらん。」
と、プロット先生が言ったので、僕達はプレティオザウルスばかりを探した。
「みんな幸せそうに木の葉っぱを食べてるわ。」
ひとみが言ったとき、横にいた清高が
「あっ、違う種類のが近づいて来た！」
と叫んだ。
「ヘァエァラザウルスだよ。見ててごらん。」
先生が指さして言ったのでみんなが一個所に集まった。
「プレティオザウルスは知らん顔だね。」
「あっ、ずいぶんと集まって来たよ。」
「ヒューイ！危な～い！」
「ずいぶんと小さいなぁ」
「あっ、一匹が足に噛みついた。」
それでようやく気がついたプレティオザウルスが大きくて長いしっぽを廻して来てヘァエァラザウルスを跳ね飛ばそうとした。
別のが左後ろ足に噛みついた。しっぽに噛みついたやつもいる。でも、しっぽが動くから同じように振り回されている。
別のが飛び上がってのどにも噛みついた。
「ヨ～シ、じゃぁ三畳紀は、このぐらいにしておいて、次のジュラ紀に行くよ。」
とプロット先生は言って地球のてっぺん、北極か、、の所に人差し指をあてた。すると地球はものすごい勢いで回りだした。しばらくして
「そろそろイイダロウ。」
と言ってまだ廻っている地球の上に同じように人差し指をあてた。すると地球の回転がゆっくりとなり、元の様に虫眼鏡で見ることが出来るようになった。
「あっ、今度は陸地が２つに別れている。」
と、菊池ひとみが叫んだ。
「ソウ、この時代にはパンジェーラ大陸が分裂してゴンドワナ大陸とローラシア大陸とになっているんだよ。よく見てごらん。」
先生が言ったので、僕達は又虫眼鏡をのぞき込んだ。
「あっ、ここにもヒューイがいるわ！」
弘子が言ったので
「どこどこ！違うよ！ヒューイの背中にはこんなトゲは無かったよ。」
またまた僕が反応した。
「オー、よく気がついたねタカシ！これはディプロドーカスと言って、大きいのでは２７ｍもあるんだよ。アッ、そうだ。面白い事にこの恐竜の足跡の化石に前足だけで歩いたと言うのが有るんだよ。なぜだかワカルカイ？」
プロット先生が楽しそうに言ったけれど、、、誰も何も言わない。
「逆立ちして歩くダイナソア！」
又、僕だ。僕の口め！
「ははは、、、、タカシの発想はすごいねぇ。学者でも考えなかっただろうなぁ。実はね、この種類もハービボーなんだョ。そして敵が来たときには背丈があるから浅い海と言っても２０ｍぐらいの深さの所まで逃げられるだろう。もし小さなカーニボーが追いかけてきてもおぼれてしまうし、このディプロドーカスは少しは水に浮くんだ。でも泳ぐことは出来ないから前足を海底に着けて歩く。判った？」
「は～い」
みんなは大きな声で返事をしたが、僕は誉められたのかけなされたのか判らないから小さな声だ。
「あっ、これ面白い！新幹線の新しいのぞみ号の前みたいな顔してる。」
また、弘子が新しい発見をしたみたいだ。
「どれどれ、どれだい？」
僕が一番に反応する筈なのに今回はプロット先生が一番だった。
「へ～、新幹線ののぞみ号ってこんな顔をしているのか。知らなかった。これはねバーロザウルスだよ。アメリカのソルトレイクシティのミュージアムに２６ｍもあるスケルトンが展示されてるよ。そうか、、、のぞみ号か、、、」
ヒゲをなでつけながらプロット先生は言葉を続けた。
「な～んだ先生、新幹線に乗った事無いの？」
またまた僕の口だ。
「そうなんだよ、ホームステイ先と学校しか知らないんだ。タカシ、今度先生を案内してくれるかい。」
「は～い」
今度は大きな声で返事した僕、実は勉強のお手伝いはチョットだけれど、それ以外ならおまかせの僕だ。
「先生、この小さいヒューイに似た恐竜も背中にトゲがあります。これってさっきのディプロドーカスの子供ですかぁ？」
虫眼鏡をのぞき込んでいたひとみが小さな声で聞いた。
「アッ、それはねディプロドーカスでもプレティオザウルスでも無くて、エ～ット、、、ステゴザウルスって言うんだ。変な名前だろう。デモすぐ覚えられるよね。首がディプロドーカスなんかとちがって短いだろう。このステゴザウルスは歯の化石なんかから柔らかい葉っぱや植物しか食べないってことが判っているんだ。長さは９ｍぐらいだから、ヒトミが言ってる見たいにディプロドーカスの子供見たいに思うよねぇ。でも、よく見てごらん、しっぽに４本のスパイクがついているだろう。これで襲ってきた敵をやっつけるんだよ。」
先生は別に、地球をのぞき込もうともしないで説明を始めた。
「同じ様なのにブラキオザウルスなんかもいるよ。この時代にはドライオザウルス、アロオザウルスや、色んなフライングレプタイルなんかもいるだろう。よく見てごらん。」
「前のえ～と、三畳紀には赤土の山なんかばっかりだったけど、このえ～と、ジュラ紀には緑のジャングルみたいになっているわ。」
普段でも植木や花の好きなひとみがつぶやく様に言った。
「ソ！そうだよ。ヒトミよく気がついたね。この頃は地球全体が暖かくなったのかも知れないね。ジャァ次の時代も見てみよう。」
と言いながら先生はまた、北極あたりに人差し指をあてた。地球は又回転速度を速めた。
「危ないから少し離れていた方がイイヨ。」
先生に言われるまでもなく僕達は回転する地球から遠ざかっていた。
「サテ、もういいだろう。」
小さな声で数を数えていたプロット先生は言って、同じ様に指を地球の頂点（やっぱり変だなぁ、北極点）にあてて回転を遅くして言った。
「サァ、もう中生代の最後の白亜紀だ。サァ、みんな覗いてごらん。そして気付いた事を聞かせてくれるかい。」
僕達は地球の周りに集まって一斉にレンズをのぞき込んだ。
「あっ、花が咲いているわ！」
一番にひとみが叫んだ。なんだよぉ、一番は僕の専売特許なんだぞ～。
「鳥も飛んでいるよ。」
「先生、フライングレプタイルの羽根が長くってグライダーみたいで～す。」
うー清高め！僕も気づいていたのに先に言われた。
「そうだね、みんな色々と気づいた様だね。もうこの頃になると色々な動物や植物が進化して以前とは姿が違っているんだよ。」
「あっ、ヒューイが泳いでいる～」
「本当だ！」
おいおい、先生が説明してくれているのに直子や弘子が勝手に叫んだ。
でも、あれはマリーンレプタイルだから違うのに、、、
「それはよく似てるけれど、今、タカシが考えている様に、プレシオザウルスって言ってマリーンレプタイルだよ。」
な、なんでや～～僕の頭のなかを先生は見れるのか？そしてどうしたの？みんな不思議に思わないでうんうんって納得すんなよ～～
「考えてみたらヒューイと名前もよく似てるね。さぁ、それ以外に前と変わっている所を探した子はいるかな？」
先生が言ったので、僕の手が勝手に挙がった。
「オッ、タカシ、何に気がついたのだい。」
「え～と、、、、えーと、、、そうだ！陸地がたくさんの島に別れています。何か今の地球に似てきました。」
「タカシよいところに気がついたね。たぶんみんなも気づいていただろうけれど、、、地球が回っている間に何億年も時代が進んだので、ゴンドアナ大陸からアフリカや南アメリカやインドが分裂していったんだ。パンゼーラ大陸からは北アメリカやヨーロッパ、アジアが分裂しているだろう。でもそれぞれの島に見える土地の間の海はシャローシーといって深さが０ｍから６０ｍぐらいの浅い海で、又もっと時代が進むとそれらがくっついたり離れたり、そして隆起や陥没を繰り返して今の地球が出来上がっているんだよ。」
「じゃ、恐竜達がエサを探すのに海があったらこまるじゃん。」
又、僕の口め！勝手にしゃべるな！
「そうだね。恐竜達の住んでいる島に食べ物が無くなったらどうなる？」
「死んでしまいま～す。」
こら、ひとみ！僕より先にしゃべるな。
「そう、ハービボー達が死んでしまったら、今度はカーニボー達も死んでしまうよね。さあ、来週は恐竜達がどうなったかを勉強しよう。じゃ、今日はこれでおしまい。恐竜新聞に書いといてね。」
プロット先生はそう言いながら手に持った針を地球に突き刺した。とたんに地球はすごい勢いで教室中を飛び回り、先生のバックパックの中へ吸い込まれて行った。
